Two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso will make his F1 return in 2021. The Spaniard will return to the top-tier of motorsports with Renault. In an official announcement, French manufacturer Renault has revealed the sensational development in the driver market.
Alonso won his two world titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006, and his last F1 race was with McLaren at the end of 2018. Alonso will replace Daniel Ricciardo who will join McLaren for the 2021 season. Renault has not revealed the tenure of the contract. Alonso joined the French outfit back in 2002 as a test driver, and he was given a full-time seat in 2003.
Alonso’s stint with Renault continued till 2006 with two world titles under his belt. He joined Mclaren in 2007, but it lasted for just one year. The Spaniard returned to Renault for the 2008 and 2009 season before making his move to Ferrari. Finally, in 2015, Alonso started his second stint with Mclaren which lasted till 2018. It was a frustrating period for Alonso with Mclaren as the team failed to deliver a competitive car. Alonso faced issues with the car throughout his time with McLaren and finally bid farewell to the sport in 2018.

Apart from Formula 1, Alonso also won the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hour race in 2018 and 2019 with the Japanese manufacturer Toyota. Alonso also entered the world’s toughest race, Dakar Rally with Toyota in 2019 and managed to finish in 13th position. The Spanish driver even tried to win the Indianapolis 500 race with McLaren but failed to qualify.
Alonso’s return to F1 has caused a stir in the driver market. Sebastien Vettel who will leave Ferrari this year will have a tough time to find a drive for 2021. If rumours are to be believed, Vettel might join the Aston Martin Racing which will be the rebranded Racing Point. Many former F1 drivers have a mixed opinion on Alonso’s return to F1 while Renault believes that with Alonso they can achieve great results.
