Lewis Hamilton got back to winning ways in the Styrian Grand Prix. Hamilton took victory ahead of his teammate Valtterri Bottas and Max Verstappen, who finished in the final podium position. Ferrari’s weekend turned from bad to worse as Sebastien Vettel and Charles Leclerc crashed into each other on the very first lap and retired from the race.
Hamilton had a straightforward race as he led from pole and pulled away from the chasing Verstappen. Carlos Sainz was hot on the heels of Verstappen when the lights went off, but the Spaniard ran wide out of Turn 1 and lost momentum. Leclerc tried to pass Vettel on the inside on the third corner and collided with his teammate. Vettel was left with a broken rear wing and had to retire. Leclerc too retired with damages caused by the collision.
Hamilton stretched his lead over Verstappen who made an early pit stop for medium tyres. The Red Bull driver joined the race in the third position, and after the pit stops by Mercedes drivers, Bottas was behind the Dutchman in the third position. The Finnish driver made a charge in the closing stages of the race and passed Verstappen to move into the runner up position. Verstappen had to settle for the final podium position.
Alex Albon finished in a strong fourth place, although he had a scare in the dying minutes of the race as Sergio Perez was all over his gearbox. Albon made contact with Perez on Turn 4, and it was almost a copy of the Hamilton incident. But this time around Albon managed to stay clear as Perez was left with a damaged front wing. Perez had to nurse his car to the finish line, and in the process, he was passed by McLaren’s Lando Norris in the final corner of the race. Norris put up a late charge to finish in the fifth position.
Perez somehow managed to hang on to sixth place while his teammate Lance Stroll finished in the seventh position. It was a photo finish for Racing Point. Daniel Ricciardo had to settle for the eighth position. Sainz made a late pit stop for soft tyres and set the fastest lap of the race. He finished in ninth position ahead of AlphaTauri’s Daniil Kvyat.
Kimi Raikkonen finished just outside the points in 11th while his teammate Antonio Giovinazzi crossed the line in 14th position. Both the Haas cars finished the race with Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean finishing in 12th and 13th position, respectively. Pierre Gasly finished the race in 16th position ahead of Williams’ George Russel and Nicholas Latifi. Esteban Ocon was forced to retire due to engine heating issues.
