Mumbai Indians won the match the match by 81 runs, thus eliminating Lucknow Super Giants off the series.
Akash Madhwal's sizzling maiden five-wicket haul (5/5), a collection of impactful batting cameos coupled with an electric fielding performance helped Mumbai Indians beat Lucknow Super Giants by 81 runs in the Eliminator and cruise into Qualifier 2 of the TATA IPL 2023.
Chasing 183, LSG got off to a stuttering start as they lost Prerak Mankad early. They would have had Kyle Mayers back in the hut too but he got lucky in the first over as he survived a run out chance. It was a very good comeback from LSG to restrict MI to 182 after they were cruising at one point with 104/2 in the 11th over.

HIGHLIGHTS
Five times Champions stun the Super Giants in a knockout game at Chepauk. MI lost both their openers within the powerplay but Cam Green and SKY threw a counter punch amassing 66 before falling to Naveen Ul Haq in the same over. The momentum shifted towards the Super Giants from the 11th over where Naveen Ul Haq sent back both the set batters with his wily variations. A cameo of 23 from 12 from the impact player Nehal Wadera helped MI get to a competitive total of 182.
In reply, LSG did not get off to the best of starts and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Marcus Stoinis was going well from one end but lacked support from the other batters. Over No.10 bowled by Akash Madhwal accounted for two wickets which included one big wicket of Nicholas Pooran who has been in superb hitting form throughout the season.
A few terrible mix-ups in the middle did not help LSG's cause either. Madhwal registered the best figures for the season with 5 for 5 and single-handedly went past the LSG batting unit. LSG fell short by 81 runs in the end. MI once again make it to the playoffs and will now be competing against GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium on the 26th of May!
WHAT THEY SAID!
" We were in a good position at one stage of the match, but everything started going wrong the moment when I played that shot, we should have played better cricket. The shot which I played was not on. The ball was coming nicely onto the bat but we just needed to have batted better. We didn't play good cricket after the strategic timeout. Quinton de Kock is a quality batter, but Kyle Mayers has a better record here, so we went ahead with him. MI batters batted really well against the fast bowlers, so I thought of starting with spinners against them. "
Krunal Pandya, LSG Skipper
" This is what we have done over the years. People don't expect us to do what we have done, but we managed to. Akash Madhwal was part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra Archer was gone and I knew he had the skills and the character to do the job for us. Over the years we have seen many guys coming in from Mumbai Indians and playing for the national team. It is important to make the youngsters feel special and make them feel part of the team, my job is to just make them comfortable in the middle. They are very clear in their roles about what they need to do for the team and that's what you want. As a team, we enjoy fielding. Good to see everyone contributing on the field. Coming to Chennai, we knew the whole team needs to come to the party. At Wankhede, you need one or two brilliant performances, but here it is a different ball game. "
Rohit Sharma 2, MI Skipper
" I have put in a lot of hard work and waiting for my chance. I have done engineering but cricket has always been my passion. I have been waiting for this opportunity since 2018. When we practice the management gives us a target which we try to execute our best. I am happy with the role that the team has given me and glad that it is coming off well. I want to do well in the next matches too to take the team all the way. Out of all the wickets, Pooran's was my favorite. Would love to keep playing in a similar fashion for my team. "
Akash Madhwal, Man of the match
