HIGHLIGHTS
A clinical performance from the Chennai Super Kings to make it to the playoffs of IPL 2023.
Opening Innings: One more time Gaikwad and Conway got off to a solid start. Totaling a partnership of 141 demoralized the DC bowlers and left very little scope for them to stage a comeback. Conway scored his 6th half-century of the season and finished on 87 spells, while Gaikwad scored 79 from 50 deliveries striking 7 maximums & 3 fours. A cameo of 20 from 7 by Jadeja helped CSK post a mammoth score of 223 on the board at the end of their innings.
Second Innings: What made DC lose was perhaps the opportunity lost to capitalize on the powerplay, whereby they lost three wickets to CSK fast bowlers. Deshpande further dented DC's scoring in the powerplay and thereafter the spinners took over to contain the home team. It was only Warner who looked in good form scoring 86 runs while none of the batsmen breached the 15-run mark. All of the CSK bowlers were scoring wickets. Deepak Chahar picked 3 for 22 who did maximum damage to DC.
With this victory CSK qualifies for the 12th time out of its 14 IPL appearances, which by far is the most any team in the league who made it to the playoffs.
WHAT THEY SAID!
" Credit to CSK, the way they played today outbattled us in all three departments. We were a good pitch to bat on, boundaries in the powerplay would have put more pressure on their bowlers. There were some positives, we didn't bowl badly with the ball, we'll have to look at the positives and come back strongly next season. You have to back your game plan, try to score boundaries, and use your feet against spin. You can't get struggle against bowlers, partnerships would have been handy. "
David Warner, Skipper
" There is no recipe for success, you try and pick the best players and give them the best slot to perform. And groom them in the areas where they are weak, somebody has to sacrifice their slot for the side. Credit to the Team management as well, they always back us. But, the players are most important, without the players, we can't do anything. I think death bowling, and confidence are very important. Tushar Deshpande has developed because he is able to execute under pressure, he has the confidence now. And when you keep playing the same players, it helps. I think the bowlers have also taken responsibility, Pathirana is quite a natural to bowling at the death but Deshpande has really developed there. I think we need to figure out and pick players who are team first - not bothered about individual performance and perform the best at knockout stages. "
MS Dhoni, Skipper
" For us, it was a must-win game, and my 50th game for this franchise. Feels amazing to make a contribution in a crucial match. I think the wicket was slow and holding up, was difficult to hit fast bowlers but with spinners we thought we had an opportunity with short straight boundaries. We set the platform for the middle order and thought we could attack later on. Glad that happened. "
Ruturaj Gaikwad, man of the match
